Choose the agent surface. Understand the system around it.

Practical, source-driven guides to coding agents such as Codex, Claude Code, Gemini CLI, Hermes and more. Each guide separates the model, the agent, the harness, the gateway and the orchestrator so you can reason about context, tools, permissions and verification.

Start here: the vocabulary is not uniform A model generates responses. A coding agent applies a model to a software task. A harness is the surrounding system that supplies context, tools, execution, permissions and feedback. A gateway routes model traffic, while an orchestrator coordinates workers. Vendors use these words differently, so inspect the actual controls rather than trusting a label.
01 · Model

Reasoning and generation

Produces text, decisions or tool calls. It does not automatically have access to your repository.

02 · Harness

Context and action loop

Supplies files, tools, permissions, execution, session state and feedback around the model.

03 · Surface

CLI, IDE, desktop or API

Gives a person or automation a way to start, observe, approve and verify work.
